Abstract

""Corregidas de nou." The closing T of C lists eight books. The sixth is attributed to Remicius. The full-page representation of Aesop is surprising: he is a handsome hunchback. The pose is that of Steinhöwel's Aesop and so many others after him, and the deformed back is clear, but the face is young and appealing. There is a simple background of clouds and hills and a title of "Esopus," not "Isop." There is then a prologue and a life of Aesop with illustrations. Then follow the eight books on 326 pages. The rectangular framed illustrations throughout are based on traditional themes; it will be fascinating for someone to trace direct sources. Most illustrations are without background; they are presented quite simply and directly. The artist has trouble with cat faces, for example, on 224. I find a couple of copies available on the web. Bound in half leather and marbled paper. As the seller notes, the binding and hinges are tight. 4¼" x 6". I cannot find the work in Bodemann."
