Abstract

This was a surprise find in a bookshop I happened upon during a week of moving around Paris. I believe that it was the one book touching on fables in the bookshop. This book contains 34 Japanese wisdom stories in French about 3 to 8 pages in length. I tried tracking down the series "La Fable du Monde." What could be more pertinent to our collection? Alas, I have been able to find almost nothing. I tried the story "The Three Vassals Who Contributed Without Knowing It to a Solemn Parade" (12). As far as I could understand the story, three sturdy warriors want to participate in a solemn parade but figure that they can do it best by disguising themselves as women and riding in a bull-drawn wagon. The trip is so devastating that they arrive exhausted and sleep through the event. They knew a lot and were courageous, but they did not know how to drive a wagon, and they let themselves appear belong their rank in society. Not a good idea! The stories are punctuated by a traditional black-and-white symbol presented before each.
