Here is a gem. Wallaston presents Pilpai in an appropriate modern English form. He claims to be adapting a source from the "end of the fifteenth century." Might this be Directorium Humanae Vitae? He does away with the florid poetry of Pilpai and follows a coherent narrative thread. Within it, he highlights each individual story with a title and groups these into fourteen chapters, each with a heading like "The Danger of Misplaced Confidence" or "Fate, Destiny, and the Cruelties of Fortune," the last two titles. This may be a source for my favorite "Kalila and Dimna" by Ramsay Wood in 1980. While there are lots of stories here with which I am well acquainted, there seem to be an equal number that I do not know. I hope I can get back to teaching Bidpai someday!
