Abstract

This booklet is in the same series as another found at the same place at the same time. The first distinguishing mark is that the similar covers show MM, but here the pretty young woman with a flaring red skirt looks down to the left at her spilt pitcher of milk. The back cover lists this book as "Série 860/8." There are two types of art in this 16-page pamphlet 8" x 11½" in size. Beginning on 1, there is a fable on every one or two pages, and every fable has at least one simple appropriate one-colored design. Among the better designs are those picturing the broken milk jar (3) and BF (6). On each of four pages there is a full page colored illustration signed "J.G"; these are, then, certainly the work of J. Gouppy, as acknowledged on the cover. Each of these four colored pages combines different irregularly-shaped panels illustrating various fables. The first on 5, e.g., combines FG, GGE, and MM. Further pages combine "The Laborer and His Sons," "The Ass Carrying Relics," and BF (8); "The Oyster and the Litigants," "The Angler and the Little Fish," and "Heron" (9); and DW and "The Stag at the Pool" (13). The front cover is in the same style. Of course I am curious now to learn how many volumes were in this series!
