Abstract

I am violating my own rules for a second time to accommodate a copy of this wonderful book! This is the third copy in the collection. Like the second, bought from David Fletcher through Ebay in 2016, this copy lacks the second volume. The first had been bought from Moe's in 1997. All three are to be distinguished from the larger paper copies from both Bartleby's in Silver Spring and De Slegte in Amsterdam. These three similar copies have crepe-paper (or rice-paper?) and are smaller than the paper books. Unlike at least the Bartleby paper copy, none of these smaller copies are numbered. Like the Fletcher copy, this book is extremely fragile. This copy has been hardbound in leather with marbled endpapers and several pages of regular paper at the beginning and end. The front cover and endpaper are disengaged from the block. The title-page here is done entirely in black. By contrast with other copies, this book seems to have held its colors well. Bassy #50. Bodemann #373.1. Hobbs #39, where she alone writes of a "large paper edition" (which I take to be the Bartleby and DeSlegte editions). This copy has been inscribed by three owners in 1896, 1941, and 1968. I am delighted to be the lucky fourth!
