Abstract

"Under the orders of the Committee of Public Instruction." What a fascinating and unusual book! It comes to us through an unlikely channel. The Librairie d'Amerique et d'Orient has seldom been open for business when I have come by their square near the Sorbonne. Even as I entered, I figured that there would be nothing for me here. That feeling was confirmed by their first response. But then the saleslady walked over to a lower shelf and pulled out this book. I doubt that there are many copies extant in the world. Amazon and Walmert offer a paperback facsimile "Translated from English Into Lersian" (!). Thank God for the title-page in English. After that, there is not a word of English in this large and long book. I estimate that it has some 350 pages. 9½" x 11¾. This is our fifth book in Persian. One of the others is "Aesop's Fables in Persian" by Hafiz Sahar. It seems not to be based on Croxall's adaptation.
