Abstract

This fragile booklet presents fifteen fables which La Fontaine took from the fables of Bidpai, as Pellier's brief preface points out. The pamphlet begins surprisingly with two pages of lists of winners of prizes sponsored by "Livres Roses." Most fables receive either a monochrome or duochrome (orange and black) illustration, either part-page or full. The illustrations include some unusual touches. The bear tending to the gardener faces a whole swarm of flies (10). The string connecting frog and mouse is quite long (21). This fragile pamphlet carries a story. After several tries at finding Gallery Bortier recommended to me by Jesuits in Brussels, I found it. Near this well-known gallery was a shop full of old books and tended by an elderly couple. The man had a distinct limp. He fetched a rather standard La Fontaine, which our collection did not need. He took time to find this pamphlet priced at €2; he mentioned wistfully that he had kept it for years. It is unusual in presenting only this segment of La Fontaine inspired by Bidpai. It was a touching moment, as though, among all those books, he had kept this pamphlet for an occasion like this. I was delighted to find something in my kind of old bookshop! And I was even more delighted to be part of the connection between long-time collector and aged seller!
