Abstract

This book was a surprise as it fell into my hands from our shelves of books awaiting library cataloguing after I had done my cataloguing. I was looking for several copies of Krylov. I took a look at this and found neither of the usual slips generated by my cataloguing. I access it now and produce those slips fearing that somehow the book has already been accessed! This Ukrainian translation of Krylov is longer than most Russian versions. It is graced by 15 full-page illustrations nicely listed on 356 of this 361 page book, just before the T of C. The best of those illustrations for me are FC (19) by V. Lytvynenko; WC (231) by the familiar O. Laptev; BF (289) by D. Modra; and best of all "Demian's Soup" (177) by B. Dekhtyaryova. There is also a small cameo at the start of each book. The illustrations are unbacked, and every new fable starts a new page. The preface of this book turns by its second paragraph to Lenin and Stalin's love for fables, with of course a highly negative mention of Hitler.
