Abstract

I am delighted to include this paperbound volume in the collection. The fable addressed here is surely one of the most fascinating and most commented upon in the body of Aesopic literature for its applications to life. I quote here the Amazon description: "The fable of Menenius Agrippa has been cited again and again since antiquity as an example of the rhetorical effectiveness of the genre. It not only appeared in Roman historiography or later fable-theoretical literature, but also found its way into fable collections at an early stage. The associated lines of interpretation and tradition history are the core theme of the studies, which take into account not only Latin and German but also English, French and Italian versions of the fable. Selected examples will be used to deal with questions of fable illustration as well as the use of this genre in exemplary literature, drama and political literature. The variety of interpretations and the breadth of functions of the fable, as well as the complexity of its network of transmissions, are thus exemplified." I am regularly hesitant to include secondary literature in this collection, but this study is too important to miss. 221 pages plus 12 pages of images.
