Abstract

This copy was discarded by the Omaha Public Library. The authors and illustrator establish well through a beginning series of pages how enamored this king is of clothes! Soon he proclaims "I want more! I will give gold for new clothes." The "trick" is established quickly. "Bad men" approach the king saying "Smart people can see our clothes. Can you see them?" This version spends no time on the making of the clothes; on the page after the sale, the king is putting on his new clothes. People disagree on the color of his new clothes -- while we see his onesy undergarment -- but one after another proclaims "I am smart, too. I see the clothes." One little boy exclaims "The King has no clothes on!" The version closes quickly by following that page with only one more: "And, the King and all the people knew it was so."
