Abstract

This brightly colored book of 64 pages offers fables from five authors: La Fontaine; Iriarte; Aesop; Phaedrus; and Samaniego. There is one fable per page. I am surprised to see so many fables from Iriarte. His are literary fables; will students be worrying about uncreative authors? The colored illustrations extend to the edges of the page. The illustrations may tend to exaggerate emotion in cartoon fashion, as in GGE (47). There is a fine facial expression on the ass taken for granted on 7 (Iriarte). The artist in MM piles the chickens, pig, and cow on top of Perrette’s milk-pot (51). As to stories, Iriarte’s “The Unfortunates” made especially engaging reading for me. There is a T of C at the end.
