Abstract

This first volume of the two is a rich resource of early Renaissance fables composed in German and then, in a second section, composed in Latin. Between the two, on 213-228, are 23 illustrations reproduced from the works represented here. This volume will be a helpful resource whenever one has to consult major fables of the major figures writing then. Those in the first part include, as the beginning T of C shows, Ulrich von Pottenstein; Antonius von Pforr; Heinrich Steinhöwel; "Niederdeutscher Aesop"; "Reynke de Vos"; Johann Geiler von Kaysersberg; Johannes Pauli; Huldrych Zwingli; Martin Luther; Justus Menius; Erasmus Alberus; Burkard Waldis; Hans Sachs; Johannes Agricola; Sebastian Franck; Johannes Mathesius; Joachim Magdeburg; Nathan Chyträus; Daniel Holtzman; Hans Wilhelm Kirchhof; Johann Fischart; "Alte Newe Zeitung"; Georg Rollenhagen; and Eucharius Eyering. In the later portion we find "Esopus Moralisatus cum Bono Commento"; Sebastian Brant; Henrich Bebel; Nicolaus Gerbelius; "Aesopus Dorpii"; Erasmus von Rotterdam; Joachim Camerarius; Philipp Melanchton; Hieronymus Osius; Lucas Lossius; Johannes Posthius; Hartmann Schopper; Michael Beuther; and Pantaleon Candidus. Latin texts are accompanied by a German translation. Formerly possessed by the Germanistik Department of the University of Münster.
