Abstract

This book is apparently a new publication of old images by Feng Zikai and old texts well translated by Xianyi and Yang, a married couple. My most recent other copy of their work has the same title in 1981/83. The placement of material has changed slightly. Several images may have been dropped. An 86-page paperback has become a hardbound book of 296 pages. The expansion is caused especially by giving each fable in Chinese and English on facing pages and starting a new pair of pages for every fable. I reread old favorites from the earlier version and enjoyed them again. The book now belongs to a series, "Library of Chinese Classics," and significant introductory material in both languages has been added. The stories are the same 121 fables from various eras. I recommend especially "Suspicion" (7), "The Title-Deed Lost on the Road" (19), "The Bird Killed by Kindness" (35), the work of Han Fei Zi (75-101), the material from the "Warring States Anecdotes" (105-127), "The Holy Eel" (165), "The Donkey of Guizhou" (187), "The Compassionate Man" (217), and" A Good Man Is Easy to Bully" (259).
