Abstract

This children's book has an attractive cover presenting many of the characters of Krylov's fables and Krylov himself writing with an ant perched on his quill. Inside nineteen fables each receive a double-page spread including a boxed text of the fable. In an appeal to its young readers, the book tends strong to exaggerated cartoon characters. The ant in GA carries a huge load of berries kept together with a system of ropes. Fruits and vegetables fly off the cart pulled in different directions by the pike, lobster and swan. Each of the quartet musicians is deeply into playing. In one of the best illustrations, the artist develops the encounter between two animals into the "great chain of hunting," starting with a small spider and ending with a human carrying a shotgun, with a separate hunt going on between spider and fly in the illustration's corner. The involvement of so many lively characters may confuse the visual focus of a fable like OF.
