Abstract

Here is an excellent selection of fables, many of them new to me: Goethe’s “Die Frösche”; Seidel’s “Der Hahn und der Karpfen”; Krylov’s “Der Schwan, der Hecht und der Krebs”; Fulda’s “Es war einmal ein Elefant”; Luther’s DS; WC after Luther and La Fontaine; Aesop’s “Der Höhle des Löwen”; Raabe’s “Zwiesprache”; BF after Aesop; Busch’s “Es sitzt ein Vogel auf dem Leim”; Lessing’s “Die Sperlinge”; and von Hagedorn’s “Erkenntnis.” Each has a full two-page illustration. These illustrations are highly dramatic, and the large format of the book – about 9” x 12” – ministers to that effect. Maybe strongest of them is the fox standing outside the “sick” lion’s lair. There is also a strong BF on the front cover.
