Abstract

This lovely large-format (9½" x 11") book is a disappointment. I am such a fan of Marc Chagall and have been even more enthused about him since we acquired a full set of his 1952 La Fontaine illustrations. "Oh, boy!" I thought. "Here someone did an exhibit of his work on fables!" It turns out that there is not a single fable illustration in this 66-page booklet. James Butterwick's introduction starts by mentioning Chagall's "La Fontaine" and then describes Chagall's whole oeuvre as like a fable. Butterwick rightly emphasizes story, love, optimism, and a childlike attitude as central in Chagall's works. The booklet presents a lovely rhythm of full works and select details. So here is at last a member of the collection that does not present a fable!
