Abstract

Here are eleven fables with their Malagasy translations and spirited colored illustrations. This translation, the introduction explains, might have gone unpublished like other Malagasy translations of La Fontaine in the past, if they had not won the "Special Prize" at the 45th anniversary celebration of this Faculty of the University. There is a beginning T of C. Many of the illustrations present two segments, a before and an after. It looks as though the ant may be allowing the desperate grasshopper into her well-stocked home. The interaction of fox and crow on 9 in their second panel is excellently portrayed. Another strong illustration shows both mice running for safety away from some very large human shoes. The wind-blown oak in mid-air has a wonderful expression of shock (17)! The two panels for "The Young Widow" (27) are beautifully contrasted. Several pages have text unfortunately running over illustration. This is our first fable book in Malagasy and apparently our 72nd language. If it is true that only 500 copies were printed, how lucky we are to have found one of them!
