Abstract

This second portfolio presents pages 235 to 458 for the second half of Chambry's 358 fables, along with the T of C and the "Justification du tirage." The chance to inspect Brunel's illustrations further lets me affirm that he loves accentuating alluring women, old people, unhappy children, violent moments, and strong contrasts. My selection of some of the most vivid and impressive of these illustrations here would include "The Dog and the Cook" (251); "The Lion in Love" (275); "The Lion and the Bull" (293); "The Wolf and the Old Woman" (306); "The Sick Man and the Doctor" (333); and "The Two Sacks" (396).
