Abstract

Here is a serious student help in four volumes bound together. Extensive linguistic footnotes help German pupils understand La Fontaine. The four parts were published in 1881, 1882, 1882, and 1883, respectively. The first part includes an introduction to La Fontaine and his poetry. Each part has a "Grammatische Vorbemerkung," preparing pupils for the grammatical surprises coming in the fables of that segment. Following the fables in each part is a helpful index of La Fontaine's source for each fable; an index of names, with a paragraph of information about each party named; and finally a French alphabetical index of the fable titles in those three books. Unfortunately, this latter index includes only the first animal named in a fable; "l'Aigle et l'Escarbot" appears only under "Aigle." The four parts include 160, 122, 188, and 200 pages. I find this a very helpful book for any doing careful analysis and not being a native French speaker. In addition, I deeply enjoyed getting to know and to chat with Herr Arendt, a longtime devoted bookdealer. I hope he will find me more unusual fable books!
