Abstract

By contrast with our original two copies of this book, both with dust-jackets, this new seventh edition has put the dust-jacket's art and texts onto the sturdier covers and added dates for the intervening editions. I can find nothing else that has changed in this good and lovely book! As I wrote then, the verso of the title-page has this helpful Latin to explain to some of us this Hebrew book: "Aesopi Fabulae: a graeco in hebraicum sermonem versit Salomon Span; picturas pinxit Bezalel Shatz." The bibliographical information on publisher, place, and date is conveniently supplied in English on the same page. The strong black-and-white line drawings begin with the Greek ship ready to go down as frontispiece. Similarly, some geometric animal figures are prominent on the dust-jacket. One favorite among these is CW as a full-page line drawing on 51. Another is the fox viewing a mask on 101. Others include TB (131); and "Death and the Woodman" (139). Page 171 begins a new section, in smaller print and without illustrations. The very last page, apparently the end of a T of C, has at its bottom what looks like a list of pages on which there are illustrations (212).
