This book has occasioned some surprises for me. I may have picked it up as a La Fontaine that I had not seen before. Now, when at last I have a little time to look into the book, I thought it was by the rather well-known Boisard. It is not; it is by his less known and published nephew, who rates no more than a footnote in Shapiro's "The Fabulists French." At any rate, there are here six books of fables in two parts. The front cover has separated. My dabblings in the first dozen fables did not strike me as worth digging further. I have generally hesitated to collect older French fabulists other than La Fontaine and Florian. I think I just confirmed why I follow that practice!
