Abstract

Five years ago I bought Henry Lemarié's magnificent set of three volumes of La Fontaine's fables. They came to my attention again this past semester as the student scouts for the upcoming exhibits of the collection were taken with his work. It is small but so exacting! Now I have come across this 32-page pamphlet that offers 52 of his illustrations. Important information on the cover is blacked out. My best estimate is that it is a piece of advertising for those three volumes. I find it unusual in that it offers not a few sample illustrations but such a high number of them. Though not done with the care of the three volume set, the illustrations here suggest the minute care that Lemarié put into the accomplishment of his work. Consider, for example, the individual sticks of wood that stick out from the bundle in the cover illustration. Lemarié died in 1991 and was apparently the acknowledged master of wood engraving. I feel so fortunate to have added a copy of that three volume set to the collection!
