Abstract

"Nouvelle Édition." A curious feature of the two volumes bound here in one book is that the title-page information for the second volume (175) has a different publisher and an earlier date of publication (1820) than the first volume! Its publisher is Tarlier in Douai. Neither publisher has a La Fontaine in Bodemann, although Boiste has a Florian. The early materials include Coste's 1742 "Avertissement" for his commentary, though the footnotes here are minimal and no other commentary seems to be present. The title-page of the second volume acknowledges Coste. There are twelve three-quarter-page black-and-white illustrations. One is placed at the beginning of every book except the first book, for which apparently the frontispiece serves. The illustrations include "The Child and the Schoolmaster"; "The Astronomer Who Fell into a Well"; FG; "The Monkey and the Dolphin"; "The Little Fish and the Angler": SW; MM; "The Bear and the Man Who Loved Gardens"; The Oyster and the Litigants"; "The Hole-Digger and His Companion"; "The Farmer, the Fox, and the Dog"; and "The Forest and the Woodman." They are nicely executed. AI at the end. 406 pages. 4¼" x 6¾".
