Abstract

This volume begins at the beginning of Book VIII after a full-page frontispiece of La Fontaine seated in the midst of animals. 106 illustrations, one at the beginning of each fable. Bodemann notes that only this Volume II was available to her team. As their description notes, there are also frequent endpieces, done in different styles from the framed illustrations preceding each fable. Bodemann's comment is accurate: "Technik und Bildausstattung sehr schlicht, offenbar für einen populären Massendruck (Druckstöcke stark abgenutzt)." For a dramatic view of "skinning a wolf," see VIII.3 on 10. And for a failed lion-face, see VIII.14 on 34. There seem to be two styles of fable illustrations. Most have an open background within the image. Some fill in the background and are quite dark in this copy (e.g., VIII.20 on 49 and IX.8 on 85). One of the best illustrations is "The Cat and the Fox" (IX.14 on 97). There is a T of C for this volume at the end. 4" x 6¾".
