Abstract

This is the second volume, published a year after the first volume, which is also in our collection. It has four sections. A foreword is followed by a section of corrections and addenda. Next comes a T of C, and finally 187 items in verse, numbered #201-387, on 640 pages. Many are fables, whether they are identified as such in the T of C or not. Goetze argues in the foreword that Sachs himself tended to treat "fables" and "jokes" closely together. The "Corrections and Addenda" address items in the first volume as well as in this second volume. Whereas we have a second edition of that first volume, we do not have a second edition of this valuable collection. Sachs was born in Nurnberg in 1494 and apprenticed as a shoemaker. He joined the Reformation early. He became a meistersinger and created a wide variety of literature, including some 6000 poetic works.
