Abstract

Here is an edition of La Fontaine new to me. The clues are that it claims that one can find the moral immediately, that it has Coste's commentary, and that it is enriched by 245 "jolies gravures en relief." This is a small book, 3½" x almost 6". The "gravures" are not, in my opinion, of high quality. A large number of books already in the collection have the same reference to the commentary of Coste. I cannot find others promising the 245 engravings. The closest parallel is a book published by Ledentu in 1820. The two illustrations on 22 and 23 are good examples. One can "read" each but they are simply rudimentary. I am happy to fill this hole in the collection. Aubanel is not listed in Bodemann. 364 pages, with an AI included at the end. By the way, unless I am missing something, the "Commentary of M. Coste" consists of occasional one-line footnotes along the way. Curious!
