Abstract

This little edition is of a size and approach like many others using Coste's notes. A quick review finds at least four different approaches to illustration to accompany the texts and notes. This edition is very similar to the Mame edition of two years earlier in 1852. The big surprise is that it is published in New York! It has the same small anonymous illustrations. Our best comparison is that Mame edition, complete with Juno's illustration scratched out; here it is intact. Mame seems to have moved on to the illustrations of Ghirardet in 1857. This book is then part of the end of a tradition. T of C at the rear. Morals are italicized within the fable texts. It is clear that, though the publisher is Roe, Lockwood & Son in New York, the printer is Mame in Tours.
