Abstract

Nach der niederdeutschen Ausgabe von 1498 übertragen durch Severin Rüttgers. This is an unusual version of Reineke in that the text does not follow Goethe's famous version but is rather a translation of the sage as written in 1498. There is an extensive T of C at the book's beginning covering the four books in detail. I gather that the course of the story is not different from what we know elsewhere. I note the early mishandling of Braun and Hinze, the narrow escape from being hanged, the promise of treasure for king and queen, the supposed pilgrim-journey, the beheading of Lampe, the trial, Reineke's fable-telling, the duel with Isegrim, and Reineke's reinstatement at the court. Some pages are loose. The 8 illustrations -- including the one laid onto the cloth cover -- seem to me to be either after von Kaulbach or else done from his plates.
