Abstract

Here is a lovely gift complementing a copy I catalogued 43 years ago! It gives evidence of the fluidity of book publishing even within one firm. That copy was green canvas with lighter lettering, while this one is blue with black lettering. That copy listed four places for Ginn and Company; this lists eight. That copy was inscribed in 1919 in Cambridge; this belonged to Otterbein College in Westerville, OH, and was apparently never taken out of the library. This adds that it is printed in the USA. Where that has 614.4 on the verso of the title-page, this has 625.11. Where that had several pages of "announcements" after the closing vocabulary, this has nothing. As I wrote then, it is a helpful little book. I think the book's first gift lies in its identification of one hundred of LaFontaine's 238 fables for special attention. The copious English notes at the rear help someone struggling with the French; they also regularly identify LaFontaine's source. The vocabulary looks complete.
