Abstract

The first surprise in this moderate sized (4¾" x 6½") book of Iriarte's fables is that it has a "Nihil obstat" and an "Imprimatur." That says something about Spain in 1923! The book's special feature lies, I believe, in its four full-page colored chromolithography illustrations: "The Donkey and the Flute" (16); "The Owl and Lamp, the Dogs, and the Ragpicker" (32); "The Purchase of the Ass" (48); and "The Hunter and the Ferret" (64). The front cover also features a grouping with a monkey engaging a whole group of animals, dominated by a large elephant. There are also frequent part-of-the-page black-and-white illustrations along the way. 78 pages, with a T of C as the inside back cover. The back cover lists books in the "Biblioteca Selecta" series.
