Abstract

This is the second Disney version I have found of "The Emperor's New Clothes." A hardbound version in 1975 featured a lion king. This pamphlet version has an earlier and a later copyright: 1970 and 1987. This version features a chubby human emperor and two "scoundrels" first seen wheeling in a loom in a handcart. All the characters wear garb of perhaps the 18th century. As to the cloth, "Anyone unfit for his position or exceedingly stupid would not be able to see it." At both the fitting and the parade, the emperor appears in his underwear. The day after the parade, the emperor issues a proclamation: "I ask only that you do as the child did and always try to tell the truth." "And so they did." This version pays no attention to the fate of the scoundrels. This pamphlet apparently was sold with an accompanying cassette.
