The circumstances of my finding this book are unusual. I visited a favorite Mannheim bookshop, Antiquariat Wirthwein, otherwise known as "Die Wortfreunde." I have found many books there over the years. A couple who manage the store have always been good to me. She said this time that she had a book for me in the storeroom, but she needed to lock me in the store so that she could go and find it. So I waited, and this book is the gift of that waiting. I am not sure that there really are any fables, but I have enjoyed the riddles and stories, and Schami is certainly endearing. I tried three riddles in this book and come away frustrated by each of them. Point, Schami! The shortest of the stories is enlightening and enjoyable: "Das Schwein, das unter die Hühner ging" (14). It turns out that a pig can protect chickens from foxes, but it takes the friendship of an old hen and a marginalized pig to make it happen.
