Abstract

Here is a curious bit of history. I had thought that this book was already in the collection, but I could not find a record of such a book. Jeanette Hilton came up with it, a copy of the original 1970 "Edition Langewiesche-Brandt." This later printing keeps the same design for the cover, raises the price from DM 4.80 to DM 5.80, adds a list of other books in the series on both sides of the last page, and adds considerable prose to the back cover. The book has become somewhat thinner, even though it adds a T of C after the beginning "Avertissement hypocrite" and is no longer 111 but rather 117 pages long. As I wrote then, I have longed for an English translation, because Anouilh's turns of phrase often escape me. Here is some help! The French is on the left and the German on the right. The original copyright 1962 belongs to Editions de La Table Ronde in Paris.
