Abstract

Cataloguing this book may present a first experience as we approach having 11,000 books in the collection. Earlier today I catalogued one of a group of books that I found at Bertrand, a bookstore in Lisbon: "Fábulas de Esopo (uma seleção)," published in 2017. As I researched it, I found an apparent earlier version with a different cover illustration, but it seemed unavailable at my usual sources. Now I reach to the next book in line, and it is that very earlier edition! By contrast this is a smaller (5" x 7¾") book, and it is paperbound rather than hardbound. It belongs to Coleção Educação Literária, not to Coleção Reino das Letras. It cost about half as much as the later book. It is recommended for "5o ano"; is that five year olds, by contrast with the other book for 8-10 year olds? I repeat comments from that later larger book: Two things characterize this book. The first is dramatic illustrations, just right for children of that age. Good examples are the wolf in L (10-11); the crow in BF (26-27); and the characters in TB (54-55). A second unusual feature is the book's structure. Illustrated fables get a page for text, a two-page spread for an illustration, and then a blank page. Fables not illustrated get a single page for text with a blank obverse. (An exception is "Fox and Leopard" (51), which has one page for text combined with its illustration.) There are thus many left-hand pages that are blank.
