Abstract

The front cover proclaims "Stories old and new especially for reading aloud." I am surprised that about one-third of the 36 stories here are part of the fable tradition. Several have unusual twists, as when a lion takes the bear's place in TB (22), the beginning of the tale is different in OF (41) and GGE (48), or two crows deal with the pitcher issue in CP (110). In TMCM, the country mouse waits until the next morning to announce his departure, and the city mouse drives him home (14). Other fables presented here include FC (12); MSA (20); DW (24); TH (30); "Brer Rabbit and the Briar Patch" (36); GA (46); "Rabbit and Bear Farming Together" (66); "The Mole's Bridegroom" (72); and "Cat, Mice, and Cheese" (104). MSA has a good tag-line, "That is the silliest thing I ever saw." In the end, "Big Jack" declares "The silliest thing of all is trying to make everybody happy!" (21). The art has its own style, perhaps particularly well-suited to bedtime story reading. 116 pages. Almost 9" square.
