Abstract

This book has fascinating ties to two books already in the collection, dated "1863" and "1870?". In general, it is identical with the 1870 copy, printed by Mame for George R. Lockwood in New York. They share the same frontispiece, pagination, and typesetting of the title-page. Both books seem to be later transformations of the 1863 edition. This 1872 copy was published, not by Mame, but by Mame et Fils. Both the 1870 and 1872 copies add four pages to the page numbers given in 1863. They thus finish the fables on 395, not 391, and the AI on 400, not 396. The strangest thing about this little copy is that the frontispiece, otherwise identical with that in the 1870 copy, has a diagonal line through it. One wonders: Did the page get folded in the press, or did the plate perhaps crack? We have a number of later copies of fables from this combination of Girardet and Mame: 1874, 1878, 1885, 1890, and 1901.
