Abstract

Here is the second volume of a set bought because of a mistake. Its major contribution to the collection may lie in the frontispiece portrait of La Fontaine, which I find to be unremarkable. As I explained a propos of the first volume, this purchase gives testimony to careless reporting by a bookseller and careless reading by me the buyer. I read the seller's descriptionm "orné de gravures originales par Cosyn et d'un portrait par Ouvré," to say that there were original engravings by Cosyn. I do believe that that is what the French says. The title-page actually says "orné, en gravures originales au burin, d'un frontispiece par Cosyn et d'un portrait par Ouvré," which I believe is saying that there is one frontispiece by Cosyns and a portrait by Ouvré. So I just spend over $56 for one nice engraving of FG by Cosyns. This frontispiece is lovely but perhaps not worth that expenditure! Otherwise this seems to me to be an unremarkable first volume of La Fontaine's fables. Perhaps the text established by Michaut makes the book even more worthwhile. Enjoy that frontispiece!
