Abstract

This is a portfolio of six large-format woodcut scenes created by Tobias Stimmer (+1584) illustrating MSA. They were created most probably in 1572 or 1573. Also included in the portfolio is a large-format pamphlet with an excellent essay by Max Bendel presenting Stimmer and examining the six scenes. Stimmer was born in Schaffhausen and worked principally in Strasbourg. These six scenes are a humorous story well told through woodcut. As Bendel points out in his helpful essay, the six scenes also represent the five principal landscape tropes of Stimmer's day, which are roughly "to market," "wandering," "pilgrim and beggar," "mounted nobility," and "seafaring warrior." Bendel's detailed comments on each of the six scenes are insightful and well worth reading, though the old German script makes it harder for some of us. I notice online that we join six libraries in the world who have this work to offer, including UCLA, the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek, and the Musées de Strasbourg. What a great find!
