Abstract

We already have a copy of this charming book in the collection. The quality of the frontispiece leads me to include this second copy. As I wrote of our first copy, here is a charming 18th century La Fontaine with designs at the beginning of each of the twelve books and a lovely frontispiece of Aesop, La Fontaine, Fable, and Truth. The two copies go back to the first editions edited by Coste in 1743 and 1757 in that they have only the small illustrations at the beginning of each book or other segment. Many later editions of Coste were copiously illustrated. As I wrote of the first copy, the illustrations at the beginning of each book seem not to have a connection with the first poem of their book, or in fact with any particular fable. They seem to be more printer's designs, sometimes repeated, as at the beginning of Books II and VIII. Some of my affection for this copy stems surely from the very low price for which we were able to get it! A second source of wonder is that the publication of this work comes very close to the time of the Revolution.
