Here is a curious copy of a book already in the collection. Since I paid $.99 for it, I cannot complain of its condition. It also has some different formatting. The curious condition is that its covers are literally two pieces of cardboard. Were these once the backing of something more representative? Or perhaps something applied to a book never formally bound? The formatting that is different has to do with the bibliographic information facing the title page and at the end of the book. The title-page in both copies lists MCMXXXXIV. The nicely bound copy adds information facing that page that twice mentions "47," once in the "Dépot légal." The T of C page at the end of the nicer copy has no bibliographical information at the bottom of the page, whereas this copy has information including a "Dépot légal" of "43-4." The signature date facing the T of C has the same "Mai-Juin 1943" in both copies. One can only imagine what life was like in France in 1943 and 1944! As I wrote about the nicer copy, this is a nicely executed book. Sixteen two-color illustrations adorn the fables, including a country rat and a city rat (while TMCM is not included among the fables!) around the title. The best of the illustrations: TB (23) and FK (27). The beautiful end-papers include a number of fables.
