This is our third volume using Bellegarde. The two others are from 1708 and 1757. This particular volume seems very close to Bodemann #97.4 from two years before this copy. The publisher is in the right two cities but has the wrong name. The book has a number of sections. The 116 fables from Aesop run to 356. The 18 from Philelphus go to 413. The 37 texts from Gabrius and Avienus run to 475. There follow then "The Battle of Cats and Mice" (to 499) and "The Frog and Mouse War" (to 524). "Protagoras" stretches to 544. Six "poetic fables" follow (to 562). Next up is "Begebenheiten aus dem Herodot" (to 573), followed finally by a fable from Gerbellius (to 576). The substantial group of illustrations is inserted at that point to finish out this well-worn little volume! The 116 fold-out illustrations are four to a sheet. Though they are highly fragile, they are almost intact. I cannot locate the illustrations for fables V-VIII. They may be pasted to I-IV. These illustrations are small but well done; they show the action of the individual fable adequately. Not the least of the challenges of this little book is to match the illustrations at the volume's end with the fables at its beginning. My strong sense is that it is worth the effort!
