"Mit 12 illuminirten Bildern." I cannot tell if these twelve full-page illustrations are hand-colored or lithographed. This 1864 printing would lie between Bodemann #287.6 in 1855 and #287.7 in 1870. The illustrations are very strong, and are surely the highpoint of this little (4½" x 6") book. Among the best of the twelve are the frontispiece, "The Wolf, the Mother, and the Little Child"; GA (14) and "The Robber and the Ass" (28). "The Horoscope" concerning Aeschylus' death has a strong image on 55-56. TH (97-98) has an unusual image that includes both animals but also one pair of humans and one solitary human. Is the young man charming the young woman a dawdling hare while the young man moving away from us is a dutiful tortoise? Similarly, "The Heron" is illustrated in an interior human scene where a scowling woman is refusing at least one man courting her (111). Picky, picky! The image for MSA (125) is nicely slanted; that ass must have been heavy! "Wolf and Hunter" (141) lines up the victims nicely and catches, I believe, the moment in which the wolf becomes the last victim.
