Abstract

This is one of a number of purchases made in a visit to Peter Bichsel's shop in Zurich, where I learned that he had purchased at least a part of a significant fable collection of Oscar Liechti. This publication belongs at the very top of our more precious holdings featuring the work of recent artists. The eleven hand-colored full-page woodcuts signed by the artist are excellent! These start with the title-page's FG. My favorites include "The Bitch and Her Litter" (6); "The Crow Emulating the Eagle" (10); "The Ass Carrying Relics" (14); "Two Goats" (18); and another FG (20). There are three other treasures here that come with one of the artist's twelve copies out of a total run of 50 copies. They include a monochrome print of "The Crow Emulating the Eagle"; a colored print of the title-page with FG; and an original drawing of FC, similar to designs used in Prause's other work in our collection from 1989. The ass carrying relics stands up, dressed like a prelate, as worshippers kneel around him with folded hands. About 9⅝" x 10½.
