Abstract

Here we have a smaller version -- smaller in format (6½" x 9¾") and offering only 26 instead of 30 fables -- of Voutch's publication of the same year titled "Quelques fables assez fabuleuses," published by Cherche midi. As I wrote of that publication, his work is most engaging! I miss Voutch's spirited foreword, but what he described there continues to come through here. La Fontaine has already been "l'humoriste en chef." Voutch lets La Fontaine's humor come clear. As I noted there, for most fables there is a full-page illustration as well as a cameo within the text. Some have a second full page illustration. Among the best are "The Bear and the Gardener"; TMCM; "Milan and Nightingale"; the first cameo for TB; and "The Pig, the Goat, and the Lamb". There is a T of C at the end showing the 26 fables here, each illustrated. This book was apparently a gift created by PEFC for interested parties.
