Abstract

"Illustrées de 8 magnifiques chromos et de 20 gravures noires." This oversized book (8½" x 11¾") surprises me. It offers six very nice chromolithographs internally besides the frontispiece ("The Angler and Little Fish") and the front cover (WL). While many early sets of chromolithographs seem to have traveled widely, I believe that this book presents the first time that I have seen these. They are well done and very well preserved. The internal six are AD; "The Acorn and the Pumpkin"; "The Laborer and His Children"; GGE; "The Child and the Schoolmaster"; and MM. "The Child and the Schoolmaster" is unusual in showing the schoolmaster straining and reaching out to grasp the frightened child. This dynamic image is perhaps the best of the eight. The black-and-white illustrations tend mostly to be small panels included together in a page of six. Bernardin married the daughter of Béchet the bookseller and began using the title "Bernardin-Béchet" in 1854. He incorporated "& Fils" in 1882. So we have a terminus-post-quem for this lovely book. The firm printed books under that name until, apparently, 1935. Canvas binding. ost-quem for this lovely book. Canvas binding. Well preserved!
