Abstract

This book has a fascinating history. I suspect that there was first an Italian edition. An English edition of "My Book of Aesop's Fables," still copyrighted by Fratelli Fabri in Milan, was published in either 1961 (as the colophon here claims) or 1962 (as our copy claims). The publisher was Follett. A second English form of the book was published with the same date of 1962 by Maxton. The book also appeared, wit the same date, as "My Book of the Lion and the Mouse and Other Fables" by Odhams in London. Now this new 1967 publication appeals back to that Odhams book as its source. The big changes are that it uses the "Pitmans Initial Teaching Alphabet" and that it is published by Initial Teaching Publishing Co. Ltd. Our collection includes four other books using Pitman's system of phonetic shorthand. The others all fall in the second half of the nineteenth century. For a standard reader of English like me, the experience of reading this orthography is weird and curious. LM, TH, and TMCM. This copy belonged to someone's curriculum center.in 1965 and had, according to the library card, only one reader.
