Abstract

I see now that I have bought a second copy of this delightful book. On the principle that a second copy gets included in the collection if it different, I include this copy with its new advertising slip. Readers may even want to compare how I look at a book one year later! It is always a pleasure to get to Gibert Joseph in Paris. They have fifteen or twenty fable books to offer. This time I arrived near closing time. I quickly sorted through the offerings and ended up with only two. This is one of the two. I am delighted to see Marie presented and presented so well. Many of the 24 fables here, listed on the closing T of C, are favorites like GA, Chanticleer, DS, TMCM, LS, FC, and WL. Generally a full-page illustration looks across at a page of text with a smaller symbol or selection. Two stories stretch out to four pages. The image for WL is one of the most telling. Almost all the animals here wear hats. The full-page image of the lamb is balanced against just an image of a hat lying on the ground with wisps. That is what is left of the lamb (44-45). The book's most striking image comes near its center: a hedgehog has clamped onto a wolf just underneath his chin (34-35). The book comes with, not a dust-jacket, but an advertising strip about 2" high: "500 ans avant La Fontaine." 8" x 10½".
