It is a pleasure to include one typical German Doktorarbeit on a classic fable theme. Ella Spiero preceded me, it seems, by some sixty years, but the kind of work and the kind of publication is well known to me. I too had to "publish" such a book. My sense is that the topic is a classic. How did a poet following in the wake of an acknowledged great handle his task? I would love a chance to take up Spiero's investigation and to check it against what scholars today may be saying."
