Abstract

I think this book is actually worth the high price I paid for it! It is altogether well made. Though it is in a larger format (about 7½ x 10½), the illustration style reminds me of the work of Richard Heighway. The two books are only twenty-one years apart. Among the artistic contributions are initials, printer's designs, part-page illustrations, and full-page illustrations. In these larger images, Valstad makes use of an unusual line technique. Lines become shading, or shading becomes lines. An example would be the first fable, WC: the ground is a series of horizontal lines. The backdrop is set with vertical lines. The tree is a series of ringed lines. Another example is the second fable: note the lines that make up the wolf's body. My favorite image among many good ones in the book is TB. The coward up a tree is wonderfully integrated with its branches. The larger images seem to have two types. Some images are enclosed rectangles, like that for The boar and the Fox. Others, like DS, LM, and MSA are open. There is a lovely header design used twice for the wolf (Ulven, gjeten and Ulven I faareklaer). A bit of brown ink helps accent both the title-pages. There is a fine last illustration: a Greek vase illustrating 2W. There is a T of C at the back. Believe it or not, there are actually page numbers, but I did not find them during my review of this book!
