Abstract: en_US I enjoy the illustration style here, and the fables are versified, with one or two (e.g. MM) even song-ified. Perhaps the best for use in a show would be LM. Interspersed poems often reinforce the morals of the fables. Repeaters from John Martin's Big Book include CP and The Reed and the Oak. Now in 1996 I have done a thorough study of the book's twenty-three fables. There are no surprises in the stories here. Rather the versions are quite faithful to the tradition, but they seem considerably padded and even wordy. They tend to be moralistic; the crow's vanity over stealing cheese, e.g., makes honest children wonder. Oh? The Misguided Ass may be Martin's best text.
